Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

  • While much of our training is geared towards ages 16 and up, we do teach younger minors if a parent or adult sibling will be taking part in the session. For minors younger than 13, we would recommend a training program suited more for their age range.

  • No. We do not train with any type of live firearms, bladed weapons, or chemical sprays. We prioritize safety and only use equipment made for training purposes.

  • “Jujutsu” is the original and correct transliteration of the Japanese art. “Jiu-Jitsu” is the common transliteration popularized by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The martial arts principles are fundamentally the same.

  • If you are training primarily for self-defense, areas including legality, de-escalation, weapons, and environmental factors must be a regular part of your training. The vast majority of MMA, Jiu-Jitsu, and kickboxing training is centered around competition and the associated rules, which can create dangerous bad habits in a self-defense context.

Defensively, you may develop the habit of not properly protecting certain vulnerable areas such as your eyes, fingers, or groin because those targets are illegal in competition and not regularly addressed in training. You may also be putting yourself in compromising positions, as even some dominant positions in Jiu-Jitsu have ‘blind spots’ and leave you exposed to a weapon attack.

Offensively, you are likely omitting highly effective techniques and attacks which could end a conflict more quickly.

You can certainly defend yourself with MMA, Jiu-Jitsu, or kickboxing, however there are serious deficiencies that must be acknowledged. Be sure to check out the Articles page to gain a better understanding of our training philosophy.

Empowerment Session

  • Yes, you can gain a significant advantage in only an hour! While mastering self-defense requires ongoing practice, our Empowerment Session focuses on key elements that can dramatically improve your safety.

In just one hour, you can build a strong foundation that empowers you to protect yourself with greater confidence and effectiveness. Remember, self-defense is not just about physical skills—awareness, legal understanding, and strategic thinking are key components that can make all the difference.

  • An Empowerment Session is $99, includes up to 4 people, and is one hour.

  • Students should be at least 16 years of age to train, as training is geared more for adults. We do make exceptions if the student will be training with a parent or older sibling. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must be present for your first session.

  • Yes, it’s your time and your training. Whether you want to spend your time focusing on a specific situational strategy, learning awareness skills, working on physical techniques, or training weapons tactics, we will accommodate your goals.

  • It depends on what your goals are. If you just want knowledge-based skills to form a general self-defense strategy, much of that can be covered in a single session and easily implemented into your daily routine. If you want to learn physical techniques, Empowerment Sessions can be useful for giving you a physical strategy to follow, but becoming technically proficient in specific techniques will take time and repetition. Factors such as your commitment level, athletic ability, previous experience, and time spent training at home will play a part in determining the number of sessions you need to reach your specific goals. Be sure to check out our Defense Courses for building your physical skills.

Payment is due before the start of the seminar, or an invoice can be requested ahead of time if the organizer knows the exact number of participants.

  • For in-house seminars, 10 people is the comfortable limit due to space restrictions. If your group consists of more than 10, it will need to be split it into two separate seminars.

For on-location seminars, we recommend limiting the attendance to no more than 20 people, as having a larger group makes it more difficult to manage safety (if physical techniques are involved) and allows for less time to address individual questions.
